Why Canada Needs Its Own Water Bomber Simulator ft. Ian White & Terry Hart
Canada’s wildfire seasons are getting more intense—but the specialized pilots needed to fight them face a major training bottleneck.
There’s only one CL-415 simulator in the world. Ian White explains why Canada should build its own and become a wildfire aviation leader.
In this episode, we break down:
- Why Canada’s worsening wildfire seasons require a national approach to prevention, training and firefighting
- The shortage of CL-415 water bomber simulators and why Canadian pilots currently have to travel to Milan for full-flight simulation
- Why Canada could become a global leader in wildfire aviation and deploy expertise internationally during its off-season
- What it’s really like flying a water bomber through extreme heat, turbulence and rapidly changing fire conditions
- How CL-415 crews assess lakes, winds, waves, debris, whales and even icebergs before scooping water
- Why water bomber pilots can perform more than 100 takeoffs and landings during a single day
- The aviation experience that best prepares pilots for aerial firefighting and why airline experience doesn’t always translate
- How Gander Flight Training prepares Canadian and international students for careers in aviation
- Hosts: Paul Micucci
- Guests: Ian White, Terry Hart
